Man remanded in custody after assault on officer

An Auckland man has been remanded in custody without plea on a charge of assaulting a Turangi police officer.

The 59-year-old constable was punched and knocked unconscious on Sunday afternoon after pulling over a driver on State Highway 1, south of Turangi.

The 24-year-old man, who has interim name surpression, appeared in the Taupo District Court on Monday and will reappear on 20 April.

The constable, who suffered concussion and lacerations to his mouth, was released from hospital on Sunday night.
