Breakers slam dunk defending champs to make final

The Breakers are in the final of the Australian National Basketball League for the first time after beating defending champions the Perth Wildcats.

The New Zealanders beat Wildcats 99-83 at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland.

The Breakers lost the first playoff match last week in Auckland by a wide margin, but won in Perth on Sunday to set up the decider on 20 April.

Perth led throughout the first quarter on Wednesday night, with the help of a steady stream of turnovers by the home side.

But the New Zealanders went ahead after two minutes in the second quarter and stayed there throughout with guards Kirk Penny and CJ Bruton and forward Gary Wilkinson finding their range beyond the three-point line.

It was 52-43 at half time and, after a sometimes fiery third quarter, the Breakers extended their margin to 11 points.

They stayed in charge through the fourth quarter, which was marred by an all-in flare-up ending with Perth's Andre Brown incurring a disqualifying foul.

The Breakers will play either Cairns or Townsville in the final.
