Charges laid following Queenstown take-off at dusk

4:24 pm on 14 April 2011

The Civil Aviation Authority has laid two charges under the Civil Aviation Act after a Pacific Blue jet left Queenstown in fading light.

The plane, carrying 140 passengers, took off on 22 June last year. Witnesses said the aircraft flew dangerously low in dark skies to avoid fog and an incoming front.

The Civil Aviation Authority will not confirm who it has laid charges against or the nature of the charges, as the person is expected to seek name suppression.

However, it says no charges have been laid against Pacific Blue and no further charges are likely.

The person facing charges is set to appear in the Queenstown District Court on 16 May.
