New biofuel blend on market

A new biofuel blend used in V8-Super Cars has been launched on the local market.

The blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol was launched in Hamilton on Thursday to coincide with the V8 Super Cars Hamilton-400 race at the weekend.

The new fuel is estimated to reduce a vehicle's greenhouse gas emissions by between a third and a half.

The ethanol is sourced from fermented whey from dairy farms and designed for use in the latest model flexible fuel cars.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority says the fuel is a real step forward in renewal energy.

It says with transport making up nearly a fifth of New Zealand's total greenhouse gas emissions, any use of alternative fuels is beneficial.
