Stores could fill gap in postal market - owner

The operator of a Wellington convenience store says small shops could fill a gap in the postal market when NZ Post closes some of its outlets.

The state-owned enterprise says a $40 million downturn in revenue means some of its post and Kiwibank outlets will have to close and staff will lose their jobs.

Ngaio supermarket operator Kelly Patel says she may vie for NZ Post business if the post shop near her store closes.

She says she inquired about partnering with NZ Post when she first opened her business but was told it was too close to the existing post shop.

She expects other convenience store owners to approach NZ Post about a business or franchise partnership if local post shops are closed.
