MetService has issued a warning for gale force winds of more than 110km per hour in places.
There is a severe weather warning along the East Coast from Banks Peninsula to Gisborne along with parts of Northland and the Kapiti Coast.
Gusts of more than 110km per hour are expected along the Kaikoura Coast, Wellington, the Wairarapa coast, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula.
MetService says the winds are part of a strong, cold southwest flow forecast to spread across New Zealand on Monday.
