Veteran wants govt help to get him to Crete

4:26 pm on 18 April 2011

A World War II veteran wants the New Zealand Government to help him get to Crete to speak at the 70th anniversary of the battle of Crete in May 1941.

Major General W B "Sandy" Thomas, 92, says the New Zealand Government has declined to give him a grant to help pay his travel expenses.

Major General Thomas last attended the commemorations two years ago with Government aid.

He says it should help him again because New Zealand owes much to those in Crete.

The Minister of Defence was unavailable to comment.
