A record number of cruise ships have visited Wellington during summer, contributing about $20 million to the region's economy.

Sixty cruise ships docked during the season, which runs between October and April, bringing a total of 125,000 passengers to Wellington.

CentrePort expects the next season to be even bigger, with 80 ships booked to call at the port, including several coinciding with the Rugby World Cup.

Chief Executive Blair O'Keeffe says that would mean an estimated $31 million injection into the economy.

Cruise ship visits to Wellington have increased by 74% in the past two years.
