Orchestra to try to keep children clear of crime

A programme aimed at keeping children clear of crime by teaching discipline through music has been launched in Auckland.

Sistema Aotearoa is based on El Sistema, which began in Venezuela more than 35 years ago.

The parent programme is credited with keeping children away from gangs and drugs, and boosting school attendance.

The New Zealand pilot has been introduced in Otara by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra with Government funding.

Orchestra chair Rosanne Meo says the programme has a proven track record.

She says children can be brought together by an orchestra and shown social cohesion and discipline.

Ms Meo says it is important the orchestra works in the community and not just in concert halls.
