A specialist in transport history has been appointed as the new chief historian.
Neill Atkinson has written six books, including a social history of New Zealand's railways and the story of the New Zealand Merchant Navy.
As chief historian at the Ministry of Culture and Heritage he will be responsible for overseeing the development of New Zealand's official histories.
