Neshanderan Rajgopaul, 29, was on Wednesday jailed for offences including shooting Constable Jeremy Snow in south Auckland in December 2009.
Rajgopaul's jail term includes 14 years for the attempted murder, which is the maximum under the Crimes Act.
His lawyer, Ron Mansfield, plans to appeal the conviction and sentence, and says other people have received lighter sentences for more serious attempted murders.
Police Association President Greg O'Connor says the jail term fits the crime and he hopes it will make criminals think twice before attacking police.
