The first stage of a $10 million project to turn a derelict inner city site in Wellington into a national war memorial park has been completed.
The park is opposite the National War Memorial museum.
Two sections of lawn flanking an area of sand and a long white concrete bench faces the National War Memorial.
A spokesperson for local residents' group Mount Cook Mobilise says the development is welcome because the area had previously been used as a dumping ground.
The Government hopes to complete the National War Memorial precinct by 2015.
