Deep water oil well technology 'not needed'

2:04 pm on 21 April 2011

New Zealand Oil and Gas says suggestions New Zealand needs the latest oil well safety technology on hand is absurd.

Environmentalists say these technologies will help contain a major oil spill and it is negligent not to have them.

But New Zealand Oil and Gas corporate affairs manager Chris Roberts says the new technology is applicable only to deep water oil wells, and New Zealand does not have any of those.

He says the industry has also been operating for more than 50 years with comprehensive safety systems.

Mr Roberts says all New Zealand's major oil spills have come from ships, not oil wells.
