Driver charged after boy drowns in Lake Dunstan

9:12 pm on 21 April 2011

A man has been charged with careless driving causing death after a minivan rolled into a Central Otago lake drowning a three-year-old boy.

Police say the vehicle was parked when it rolled into Lake Dunstan on Thursday afternoon.

Acting area supervisor Mike Williams says three adults and a 10-year-old child managed to get out but attempts to unbuckle the boy failed.

A witness dived down to the vehicle but was also unable to rescue him.

Fire Service volunteers entered the water and retrieved the boy but they could not resuscitate him.

Other occupants of the minivan were taken to the Cromwell Medical Centre where they were treated and discharged.

A 32-year-old man, who is a relative of the child, is to appear in the Alexandra District Court on 27 April.

The police serious crash unit will investigate the incident.
