78-year-old jailed 14 years for sex crimes

A Manawatu pensioner has been jailed for historic sexual offending described by police as some of the worst and most complex they have investigated.

The 78-year-old, whose name is suppressed, was last year found guilty on 21 charges, including rape, sexual violation and child cruelty.

His offending between 1963 and 1990 included forcing his children to have sex, raping his son's girlfriends and beating his children.

The man was jailed for 14 years when he appeared for sentencing in the Palmerston North District Court on Thursday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tusha Penny says the man remains in total denial.

She said she found the profile of the convicted man similar to that of the so-called Beast of Blenheim, Stewart Wilson, jailed for rape, bestiality, stupefying and ill-treatment of children.

"There's never been any acknowlegement of the offending at all, there's never been any remorse shown, and there's been no compassion at all shown towards the victims.

"I've found that to be quite rare."

The case forms part of a backlog of almost 150 uninvestigated child abuse cases in Wairarapa.

In February, the Independent Police Conduct Authority ruled that police handling of the cases had been undesirable, unjustified and unfair to the victims.
