One man is dead and another is in hospital with serious injuries after a shooting incident in a settlement south-west of Nelson, police say.
Police were called to a house at Tapawera, about 60km from Nelson, about 11.20pm on Thursday.
They say there was an altercation between the men before one suffered serious gunshot wounds and the other was later found dead in his car.
Police have named the dead man as Tapawera resident Ian Boyd, 58, and say he was related to the 30-year-old injured man who is in a serious but stable condition in Wellington Hospital on Friday.
A search was mounted for Mr Boyd following the shooting and he was found dead in his vehicle near Nelson shortly after 3.30am.
Tasman District Commander, Superintendent Gary Knowles, says an attempted murder investigation is underway and the death will be reported to the coroner.
He says the injured man had been visiting from Christchurch.
