Four die on roads over Easter

9:37 pm on 24 April 2011

The Easter holiday road toll rose to four on Sunday with the deaths of people in crashes in Wellington and Otago.

The driver of a stolen Subaru was killed in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville when the stationwagon overturned on Fraser Avenue at about 2am on Sunday, police say.

Three occupants of the car were taken to Wellington Hospital. Police suspect alcohol and speed were involved.

Police say a motorcyclist, who was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a crash with a car in central Wellington on Saturday afternoon, died on Sunday.

A 19-year-old man died in a crash on State Highway 83 (Kurow to Duntroon Road) at Otekeieke, Otago.

Police say a single vehicle appeared to have left the road at speed at about 5.45am on Sunday.

The two occupants had to be cut from the vehicle and the second was taken to Dunedin hospital by helicopter, in serious condition.

On Saturday evening, a 50-year-old man was killed when his motorbike crashed on a rural road at Frasertown in Wairoa District. Police say the incident involved a vehicle towing a horse float.

National road policing manager Superintendent Paula Rose says a lower tolerance for speeding is in effect over holiday periods and officers will take action against anyone who breaks the limit by 5 km/h or more.

Last year, 12 people were killed on the roads over the Easter period - the highest number since 1992.

The official holiday period ends at 6am on Tuesday.
