Police appeal for sightings of drifting boat

11:39 am on 24 April 2011

Police are asking boaties to look out for a motorboat which has been drifting off the east coast of the lower North Island since yesterday.

The five-metre twin hull motorboat flipped in a heavy swell off Sandy Beach just north of Castle Point.

The boat's owner made it to shore, but the kill switch that would normally stop the engine failed and the vessel continued towards open sea.

Police say it is hard to predict which way or how far the boat might have drifted and say there's a possibility it could wash ashore.

The boat has red pontoons and a red engine.
