Dying paedophile must stay in jail

6:01 pm on 24 April 2011

One of the country's oldest jailed paedophiles, who is terminally ill, will stay behind bars because suitable accommodation cannot be found for him in the community.

Donald Liddington, 73, is serving preventive detention for a string of sexual offences against young girls, including the rape of a pre-schooler.

The exact nature of his condition is not being disclosed, but it is so serious that he requires hourly checks by prison medical staff.

He still poses a high risk of sexual reoffending.

In March the Parole Board rejected a health care proposal for Liddington as inadequate, and now it says further enquiries have failed to find a place that can fully manage his risk and medical needs.

Liddington's parole will be considered again in a year, or sooner if the Corrections Department can find alternative accommodation for him.
