The names of 376 men killed in the World War II are now permanently featured on a memorial in Wanganui.
For more than 50 years, 376 white crosses have been laid out every Anzac Day for the fallen men.
War veteran Jim Clarke, who served in Malaya from 1957 to 1959, says the new memorial is made of black granite and the names are engraved in silver.
Mr Clarke says members of the Returned and Services Association decided getting a permanent memorial erected outside its headquarters was long overdue.
The project cost about $15,000, weighs about 10 tonnes and was largely paid for by the community and grants.
