A World War II veteran has been awarded his service medals 67 years after returning from serving in the Pacific.

Phillip Buscomb received five medals during Anzac Day commemorations at the Ranfurly War Veterans Home in Auckland on Monday.

The 90-year-old served for more than three years and was deployed at locations including Guadalcanal and the Treasury Islands.

Mr Buscomb received his medals after a community liaison officer in the Army realised they had never been awarded and applied for them on the veteran's behalf.

Mr Buscomb says he is happy to be recognised, although the presentation had brought back forgotten memories of his war-time mates.
