Heavy rain heads into Northland

6:15 am on 28 April 2011

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast for Northland on Thursday, continuing this week's severe weather in the North Island.

MetService says rain and storms will arrive in the north during the morning and spread to the Bay of Islands.

Between 70 and 90 millimetres is forecast for Thursday.

Rain is expected to clear from the east of the North Island in the morning, alleviating the danger of further flooding in coastal Hawke's Bay communities.

About 80 people have spent the night away from their homes after being evacuated on Wednesday because of rising waters.

Lines companies say about 500 people in Manawatu, Taupo and coastal Taranaki have been without power for a second night running because of network damage caused by severe gales.
