Access to some Hawke's Bay coastal areas restricted

Civil Defence in Central Hawke's Bay says restricted access to some of its coastal areas will continue because of major slips brought down in last week's heavy rain.

The roads will be reassessed on Monday morning.

The district's Civil Defence says most of the road to Kairakau beach fell away on Sunday afternoon and is accessible only by foot.

Civil Defence Controller, Steve Thrush, says access to Blackhead, Kairakau and Mangakuri beaches is restricted to essential services and residents only.

He says no access is available to Aramoana and the southern end of Pourerere Beach and the police are patrolling the restricted areas.

He says Civil Defence met residents in Kairakau and Blackhead Beaches on Sunday regarding access to their properties and which ones have been deemed as temporarily uninhabitable.

Meanwhile, the Wairoa District Council is continuing work to fix its main water supply line into the town after it was damaged by a severe slip.

A temporary pipe is being constructed.

Schools in the town will be closed on Monday while the council secures the water supply.
