Police spend $5m to boost armed patrols

5:02 pm on 30 April 2011

Police are a step closer to having more access to firearms, as new the Police Commissioner signs an order for all response vehicles and highway patrol cars to be fitted with safes to carry weapons.

Peter Marshall has authorised about $5.5 million in spending for the secure units.

They will hold a Bushmaster rifle, a Glock pistol, a Taser and two sets of ballistic armour.

Mr Marshall says extra firearms will need to be bought and imported, and there'll be more weapons training for officers.

He says the rollout will start straight away, but will take months.
