More than 50 members of the New Zealand Defence Force have arrived back in Christchurch after serving six months in Afghanistan.

It's the 17th rotation of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, which has been based in Bamyan province maintaining security and assisting in the reconstruction and development of the region.

The 54-member team touched down in Christchurch International Airport about 11.30am on Saturday.

They were met by family members and a contingent from the military camp in Burnham.
