Schools and childcare centres in Wairoa will be shut on Monday because of disruption to the area's water supply.
A severe slip broke the main water pipeline early on Saturday morning, exacerbating problems caused by the storm a few days earlier which had damaged the town's reservoir.
Wairoa District Council says schools, kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, kindergartens and childcare centres are closed until further notice.
On Sunday, the council is using water tankers to replenish the town's water supply.
Water was being pumped for two hours at a time, at 7am, midday and 6pm - though this would depend on supplies.
The council says some houses are without running water, while others are experiencing a significant loss in pressure, and has advised people to conserve water and consider water storage options.
