Airways reviewing operations after quakes

The organisation that controls air traffic operations says there are no plans at this stage to move its major base from Christchurch, though it is carrying out a review following the region's two large earthquakes.

In addition to managing air traffic control towers, Airways Corporation operates two radar centres, the largest in Christchurch and the other in Auckland.

The Christchurch centre closed briefly after the two earthquakes, although Airways says no incidents occurred.

Airways says all contingencies worked effectively during and after the earthquakes.

The company is now working with GNS scientists to assess whether the main centre should stay centrally located in Christchurch.
