Former MP accused of fraud

A former MP is on trial at Auckland District Court charged with defrauding sports clubs, a children's charity and companies set up involving gaming machines.

The man, who has name suppression, has three co-accused.

The Serious Fraud Office says the group made $1.8 million between 2003 and 2005 as a result of a scheme.

The retired politician faces two charges of conspiring to use documents dishonestly with intent to obtain pecuniary advantage, and attempting to obstruct the course of justice by destroying evidence.
