A police investigation is under way after a body was found in the Waikato town of Huntly.

The body was discovered in vegetation in vacant land off Shaw Street on Tuesday near a railway line which services the Huntly Power Station.

Police say initial indications are that the remains have been there for some time.

Detective Inspector Chris Page says the scene has been secured and a forensic investigation is under way.

Police are working as quickly as possible to identify the man, he says.
