Children's Commissioner now part-time role

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has announced the head of paediatrics at Hawke's Bay District Health Board will take up the role of Children's Commissioner.

Russell Wills will take up the part-time role from July, while continuing to work at the DHB's Department of Child, Youth and Health.

Dr Wills says he wants to remain in Hawke's Bay to raise his family and continue his work at the DHB.

Dr Wills admits maintaining both roles will be difficult, but remaining in his paediatric position will keep him connected to community issues.

However, he says that will help him to provide good advice in his role as commissioner and will appoint a deputy at a later time.

The Labour Party criticised the part-time appointment, saying the role is fulltime and shows the Government is making cuts in the sector.
