Birkenhead residents begin clean-up

7:18 pm on 4 May 2011

Twenty-three homes on Roseberry Avenue in the suburb of Birkenhead were damaged by the tornado that hit Auckland's North Shore on Tuesday and one is uninhabitable.

Flying trees ripped some houses apart and tiles were torn from the roofs. Trampolines are perched on top of houses.

A Radio New Zealand reporter saw contractors removing a tree from inside the ruins of a house that it almost completely demolished.

Elsewhere on Roseberry Avenue, residents were using chainsaws to cut branches which have destroyed fences.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown and Northcote MP Jonathan Coleman visited the suburb on Wednesday morning.

Mr Brown says the North Shore is lucky more people were not killed or seriously injured.
