The Government is being asked by the consul general for the Philippines to waive some of the visa requirements for the family of the man who died in Tuesday's tornado.

Benedict Dacayan, 37, was swept to his death by the tornado as it moved through the Albany shopping area.

Consul-General Emilie Shi says Mr Dacayan's father and parents-in-law want to come to New Zealand for his funeral, but they are finding getting a visa slow going.

She is asking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to speed up the process, so they can get to New Zealand for his funeral.

Mr Dacayan was a structural engineer and had lived in New Zealand for five years with his wife and two children, aged 11 and 5.
