Passengers on a bus escaped serious injury when it went down a bank in the central North Island on Friday.

The bus was travelling on State Highway 4 near Ongarue in the Ruapehu district when it left the road and plunged about 40 metres down the bank at 2.15pm.

The bus did not roll, however, and police say all 20 passengers and the driver are safe.

Some people have minor injuries.
