Canterbury rugby supporters hope for Air NZ help

The president of the Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club hopes fans will still get help to go to relocated Rugby World Cup games despite the Government dropping plans for special travel packages.

It was announced in March that two quarter-finals would be moved to Auckland because of earthquake damage to AMI Stadium.

Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully said at the time that work had started on special, concessional travel packages.

Mr McCully now says there will be no further planning because the commercial travel market still has good value fares to meet demand for travel from Christchurch.

Air New Zealand flights from Christchurch to Auckland on 7 October, the day before the quarter finals begin, are selling at present for between $158 and $489 one way.

Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club president Dick Tayler says he hopes help might still come from Air New Zealand.

Mr Tayler says, without help, Cantabrians who bought tickets to all the games at AMI stadium may now have to choose which ones they travel north for.

Meanwhile, internet auction site TradeMe plans to launch next month a service to find Christchurch residents free billet accommodation in Auckland. A similar site was launched after the February earthquake.
