More shops in a tornado-damaged mall in Auckland are reopening.

The tornado ripped through parts of Auckland's North Shore on Tuesday afternoon, killing Benedict Dacayan, 37, and injured several other people.

As well as the damage to businesses, 19 homes were damaged with one deemed uninhabitable.

More than 80 shops in the Westfield Mall in Albany reopened on Wednesday, and more stores, on the lower level of the complex, were to open on Sunday.

Westfield spokesperson Deb McGhie says more retailers will be able to open on Monday while a small number could be closed for weeks while repairs are carried out.
