Police say shooting death appears accidental

Police say a shooting death south of Auckland on Saturday night appears to have been accidental.

A man in his 50s was killed in rural Waiuku.

Police say he was in a hunting group but they won't say whether they were duck hunting.

The duck hunting season opened on Saturday.

The police spokesperson says the death is by all accounts a tragic accident. A post mortem will be carried out on Monday.

Meanwhile, police in the top half of the North Island say they received about 15 complaints about unsafe behaviour during the first hours of the duck hunting season.

Senior Sergeant Matt Rogers of Police Northern Communications said the complaints received on Saturday morning included that hunters had failed to properly identify their targets or were shooting on farms too close to other people.
