The mayor of Lower Hutt says he has received credible information on plans by the Government to relocate the state- owned science agency Industrial Research Limited.
Ray Wallace says a science technology team his council has been working with has told him a move to Auckland or Christchurch is likely.
A spokesperson for Science and Innovation Minister Wayne Mapp says the minister is awaiting the results of a review and after consideration will make recommendations to Cabinet.
Mr Wallace says a relocation of the Crown research institute would result in moving 350 jobs elsewhere and the Government should come clean on the plans.
Industrial Research Limited declined to comment on the possible relocation plans.
