Qantas plane forced to turn back to NZ

Qantas says a suspected lightning strike does not appear to have damaged a plane that left New Zealand bound for Melbourne.

The plane with 144 passengers returned safely to Auckland International Airport about an hour after taking off on Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured, the ABC reports.

Qantas says engineers are checking the 737-800 on Wednesday night, but no damage is apparent.

The airline says the pilots on flight QF26 turned the plane around as a precaution after believing it had been hit by lightning.

After three hours on the ground, passengers were put on another flight to Melbourne.
