Paroled murderer David Tamihere has been banned from returning to Coromandel Peninsula, where he killed two Swedish backpackers in 1989.
The Parole Board has imposed the restriction, as it assesses Tamihere's progress after six months out of prison.
Reports indicate he is fully complying with the conditions of his parole.
In light of this, the board has decided that Tamihere's full residential restrictions, or house arrest, can be relaxed to an overnight curfew.
But he is forbidden from going to the Coromandel Peninsula until November 2015, unless he has written approval.
Tamihere has been spending lengthy periods in hospital with undisclosed health problems.
