Corruption inquiry begins

12:38 pm on 12 May 2011

An inquiry into accusations of corruption in the Marlborough District Council has begun in Blenheim.

The council has appointed Auckland barrister Denis Sheard to conduct an inquiry into claims raised by Councillor Jamie Arbuckle.

Mr Arbuckle won't detail specific allegations, but says information shown to him is damning.

He says the complaints cover a range of activities from tendering to consents.

Other councillors believe the complaints are merely sour grapes.

The hearing will last three days and Mr Sheard says he expects to deliver his findings by the end of June.
