An Eastern Bay of Plenty man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after a baby suffered non-accidental injuries which have led to severe brain damage.
The four-month-old was admitted to Starship Hospital at the end of April and is now off life support but has suffered severe brain damage which police say will only truly become apparent as he grows older.
Police say it was not apparent when the boy was admitted to hospital if he would survive.
The arrested man also faces eight other charges, including male assaults female, assault with intent to injure, threatening to kill and possession of cannabis.
The 38-year-old was arrested in Auckland on Wednesday and appeared in the Manukau District Court on Thursday.
The man has been remanded in custody to reappear on Friday.
