The crash of a gyrocopter on a dairy farm north of Kaitaia has claimed the life of a man and left another with serious injuries.
The Fire Service says it went to Gill Road in Awanui shortly after 11am on Saturday in response to a report of the crash.
Two people were aboard the craft when it came down in an open paddock about 200 metres from the road.
The Fire Service says the seriously injured man was taken to Whangarei hospital by helicopter.
The crash site is under guard awaiting a visit by a Civil Aviation inspector.
