Lasers used against aircraft in Hamilton

8:52 pm on 14 May 2011

Police in Hamilton say three aircraft were targeted by a green laser light on Friday night.

They say a Cessna aircraft carrying two people reported being targeted with a green light at about 8pm. An hour later another aircraft reported a similar incident.

Police say a third aircraft carrying 15 passengers from Auckland to Hamilton was then targeted and was able to give them a possible location for the source, west of the city.

However, police say they were unable to locate those responsible.

Senior Sergeant Kent Holdsworth says, if caught, those responsible could face possible charges of endangering transport, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

He says the perpetrators are putting the lives of others at serious risk.
