Police warn those who shine laser lights at aircraft

5:46 am on 15 May 2011

The police are warning that anyone caught shining laser lights at aircraft faces stiff penalties.

Planes were targeted three times in Waikato between 8pm and 10pm on Friday.

The police have yet to find those responsible but Senior Sergeant Kent Holdsworth says the offenders are likely to face a charge of endangering transport, for which the maximum sentence is 14 years' imprisonment.

Those responsible may think they are having fun, he says, but they're putting lives at serious risk.

Anyone with information about Friday's attacks is asked to contact the police in Hamilton or call the Crimestoppers phone line.
