11:00 am on 15 May 2011

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is aware of an allegation of rape made by a New Zealand woman living in Kuwait.

Apart from saying it is has offered consular assistance to her, the ministry is making no other statement at this stage.

The nearest New Zealand mission is in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

Further details of the case are unavailable.

But a Kuwaiti newspaper, Al Rai, is reported to have said the woman was taken to a party and was raped after she had been given a drink and passed out.
