'No evidence of corruption' at Marlborough council

9:21 pm on 16 May 2011

The man appointed to investigate complaints against the Marlborough District Council says he has seen no evidence supporting claims of corrupt practice.

Auckland barrister Denis Sheard has spent three days in Blenheim hearing claims from about 40 people.

Mr Sheard said on Monday there have been no corruption allegations against current staff.

He said there are historic allegations dating back 20 years or more, but they are not supported by documentary evidence.

Most complaints relate to tendering and regulatory processes, he said, and he may want to re-interview some people about their concerns.

Mr Sheard said it is likely he will make recommendations aimed at improving council transparency and accountability.
