Stay of prosecution granted for perjury accused

The Solicitor-General has halted a number of prosecutions filed by a convicted murderer who wanted to charge several witnesses from his High Court trial with perjury.

Stephen Hudson was found guilty of murdering Nicholas Pike and jailed for life with at least 16 years in prison in 2010.

He continues to maintain his innocence and in February this year laid private prosecutions against 14 people who gave evidence at his trial.

Solicitor-General David Collins, QC, has now issued stays of proceedings in all but two of the cases.

The lawyer for those two accused, Val Nisbet, on Tuesday asked that their prosecutions also be dismissed.

However, Wellington District Court judge Carrie Wainwright gave Hudson another month to file further documents and continued name suppression for the remaining two accused.
