Artists seek to beautify Ponsonby eyesore

An arts trust in Auckland is taking it upon itself to beautify a huge hole in the ground abandoned by developers when they went into receivership almost six years ago.

The hole at the failed $250 million Soho Square development is almost twice the size of a rugby field and is in the middle of Ponsonby's upmarket shopping strip.

Mark Castle from the Uptown Arts Trust says locals are sick of looking at it, so the trust has applied to the Auckland Council for permission and funding to surround it with billboards covered in murals.

Meanwhile, the receiver development, Grant Thornton, has secured a new resource consent for a development that would be 40% bigger than before.
