A sickness beneficiary has appeared in the Porirua District Court charged with murdering a man in Hastings.

Police found the body of Douglas Bruce Apperley in his house in the suburb of Raureka in April.

A post-mortem determined that the 59-year-old died from severe head injuries and stab wounds to his chest.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange says a 44-year-old man arrested on Wednesday used to live near Mr Apperley but recently moved to the Kapiti Coast near Wellington.

The man was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in court and remanded to the care of Mental Health Services.
