All Blacks captain Richie McCaw is the New Zealand Rugby Union's next major target.
First five-eighth Dan Carter, 29, signed a four-year deal on Wednesday.
McCaw is expected to announce his plans in the near future as to what he intends doing after the Rugby World Cup which begins in September.
NZRU chief executive Steve Tew hopes that retaining Carter will help keep other players.
Carter's manager says he turned down three lucrative offers from European rugby clubs to stay in New Zealand.
